The hare thinks he has nothing to lose in this race and doesn't really try until the very end, when it's too late. The tortoise, for his part, just plods along. Certainly, the Bugs Bunny cartoon makes some changes to the original "fable" and, I believe, the underlying message is lost. In the fable, you learn (a) not to judge a person by appearances ("a tortoise is supposedly slow but wins a race against a much quicker hare") and (b) not to be vain ("the hare is very vain in his imaging that the tortoise could never beat him in a race.") In the Bugs Bunny cartoon, you learn (a) ... well, nothing, really. The tortoise cheats a little bit and Bugs cheats a little bit. In the end, the tortoise wins because the other hares are too ignorant to see past Bugs' disguise and holds him back so the tortoise (disguised as a hare) can win. Just a weird cartoon I remember seeing hundreds of times growing up, with really no one to root for. A strange moment in Bugs' history.
